My Birth Philosophy

Like many doulas, I believe in the power of birth as a normal, natural event, not a dangerous anomaly. I've seen firsthand the way that birth can transform women - they become mothers, of course, but they also gain a tremendous strength and confidence in themselves.

I'm honest enough to admit that I see a lot of flaws in the medical model of childbirth. I'm glad that hospitals are available when serious problems truly do occur, and I believe that there's a time and place for all interventions - but they all have their pros and cons. The key is to make informed choices with the help of trusted professionals.

I truly believe that any woman who wants a drug-free birth, and who has a normal labor, can do it. Labor is the only pain that has a purpose and a tremendous reward at the end. But if you choose pain medication for whatever reason, or if your labor goes outside the norm, then I'll still be there to support you 100%.

Baby faceA very important part of my job is helping women assess the risks and benefits of any intervention, drug or procedure, and make the decision for themselves. I can't tell you what to do, but neither can your doctor, nurse or midwife! Women have the right to control what happens to themselves and their babies, and I will help you make a truly informed decision.

I welcome families of all configurations, including GLBT families, single moms, and teen parents.

I think the key to a happy birth is that the mom feels supported and empowered throughout the process. Circumstances may change, but if you can look back and say "I made my own choices and did the very best I could," the rewards will be very long-lasting.
